Who was Buddy Holly?

Born on September 7 of 1936, Charles Holley, better known as Buddy Holley, was an American singer-songwriter and one of the original pioneers of Rock and Roll music. Buddy Holly was born in Lubbock, Texas, where at a young age, the future star developed a connection with music and various instruments. Buddy Holley, who was extremely ambitious even as an adolescent, developed a unique blue grass sound that caught the attention of various crowds he performed for. In 1956, following a performance, Buddy Holly signed a contract with Decca Records. Holly formed his own band, called The Crickets, which consisted of Holly (lead guitar and vocalist), Joe Maulding (bass), Jerry Allison (drums) and Niki Sullivan (guitar). Although the band was profitable and enjoying success, Holly felt restricted by the label’s musical preferences. As a result of these creative impediments, Holly hired Norman Petty as manager, who subsequently contracts various music publishers and labels.

  With a new manager and more freedom, Holly and the Crickets experienced massive success in 1957 and 1958. Holly, who was signed as both a solo artist and the lead member of the Crickets, skyrocketed atop the music charts for his two debut albums that were released on November 27, 1957 and February 20, 1958.

The Death of a Rising Star:

Buddy Holly was offered a prominent spot in the Winter Dance Party—a three-week tour across the Midwest of the United States which opened on January 23, 1959. Holly, who was thrilled to be a part of a massive tour, assembled a makeshift band as a result of the Cricket’s break-up; Holly’s band members refused to move to New York with Buddy during the latter portion of 1958.  The tour ultimately proved disastrous; Holly and his band mates were subjected to lengthy road trips on buses that were plagued with faulty heating systems and malfunctioning engines.

Following a performance in Clear Lake, Iowa on February 2, 1959, Holly, who was sick of bus trips, chartered a small jet to take him and three band members (Jennings opted for the bus as a result of limiting seating) to the next stop on tour.

Shortly after the jet took off, the plane crashed near Mason City in the early hours of February 3, 1959. Everyone on board, including Holly, tragically died. Holly’s funeral was held on February 7, 1959 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Lubbock, Texas. To augment the tragedy, Holly’s then pregnant wife, a widow after only 6 months of marriage, miscarried the couple’s child, ultimately ending that part of Buddy Holly’s family tree. Biggie Smalls was raised in Brooklyn, New York and released his debut album Ready to Die in 1994. The album, which reached multi-platinum status, is regarded as one of the best rap CD’s of all time. Biggie Smalls, due to his popularity and aggressive rhymes, became a central figure in the East Coast hip-hop scene. As a result of his success, Smalls increased New York’s rap credentials at a time when the majority of rap artists came from the West Coast.

Biggie’s rise to prominence is directly correlated with his death. During the late 1990’s a feud developed between Biggie’s rap label, Bad Boy and the West Coast rap empire, Death Row Records. The West Coast rap scene, which was led by Tupac Shakur, Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg was intertwined with gang life and the gangster credo that dominated rap music in this era. Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, who were once close friends, were at the forefront of the East Coast versus West Coast rap feud that dominated this era of hip hop music. Biggie Smalls traveled to California in February of 1997 to promote his upcoming album Life After Death. On March 5, 1997 Smalls gave a radio interview with a local station and stated that he had feared for his safety because he was wrongly accused of being involved with the murder of West Coast legend, Tupac Shakur. The death of Tupac sent shockwaves to the rap community; the coastal feud became real.

On March 9, 1997, at roughly 12:30 a.m., Biggie Smells left with his entourage in two SUVs to return to his hotel after a party he attended had shut down due to overcrowding. Wallace, who was travelling in the front passenger seat of the truck, was joined by fellow rappers Lil’ cease and driver, Gregory Young. By 12:45 a.m, the streets were mobbed with people leaving the party. When Wallace’s SUV stopped at a red light, a black Chevy Impala pulled up alongside. The driver of the impala, an African American male, rolled down his window and fired at the SUV with a 9 mm blue-steel pistol. The SUV was riddled with bullets, four of which struck Biggie Smalls in the chest. Wallace’s entourage rushed him to the Cedars Sinai Medical Center, but it was too late—Biggie Smalls was pronounced dead at 1:15 a.m.

The Death of Brandon Lee:

On March 31, 1993, while filming The Crow, the crew filmed a scene in which Draven walks into his apartment and discovers his fiancée being beaten by a group of thugs. Michael Massee, an actor, who was playing on of the film’s villains, was supposed to fire a pistol at Lee as he walked into the room. As a result of various delays in filming, the crew decided to make dummy cartridges (bullets that appeared real but contained no propellant) from real cartridges, by extracting the bullets, dumping out the propellant and reinserting the bullets. However, the crew neglected to remove the primers, so if fired, the cartridge could still produce enough force to push the bullet into the barrel—the gun took the effect of a squib load. At some point during the creation of these dummy cartridges, the live primer was unknowingly discharged by a crew member while in the pistol, leaving the bullet stuck in the barrel.

This malfunction went unnoticed by the crew and the same gun was later reloaded with blank cartridges which were used in the scene in which Lee was shot. When the first blank cartridge was ejected, the stuck bullet was propelled from the gun. This bullet struck Lee in the abdomen, lodging in his spine. When hit, Lee fell instantly causing director, Alex Proyas to shout “cut!” As lee remained on the ground, the cast and crew immediately realized he was wounded. Lee was rushed to the New Hanover Regional Medical Center; however, following a six-hour operation to remove the bullet, Lee passed away at 1:04 pm on March 31, 1993 at the age of 28.

Following Lee’s death, Proyas decided to complete The Crow. At the time of the tragedy, the majority of the film had already been completed with only a few scenes remaining. Throughout his career, Carrot Top has appeared in numerous television programs and movies—much of his works are sartorial based or parodies of established works. The majority of Carrot Top’s career has been spent in comedy; his fun-loving nature and use of props was an easy-going take on comedy. That being said, Carrot Top’s career has somewhat faded over the years; he is now spending the majority of his time in Las Vegas where he headlines shows at the Luxor. The hotel proclaims that Carrot Top is the “Comedian of the Year”; his routine incorporates dozens of props, which are stored in a novelty-sized trunk on stage.
